An almost entirely silent film set in the late 1920s, The Artist follows silent movie star George Valentin (Dujardin) as his thriving career hits a major stumbling block with the inevitable arrival of sound. At the same time this technical breakthrough is proving a boon to an up-and-coming starlet named Peppy Miller (Bejo).
With nods to such classics as The Jazz Singer, Singin’ in the Rain and Metropolis, The Artist acts as a movie within a movie, depicting the beauty and bittersweet end of an era.
Essentially a black-and-white homage to the early days of Hollywood, The Artist has been receiving rave reviews and this week swept the board at the Oscars, claiming awards for best picture, director and lead actor.
Visually stunning, imaginative and cleverly scored, this film really does have it all - a touch of romance and comedy, a dash of drama and even a scene-stealing Jack Russell terrier.
