Mum’s the word

mothersday

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman,
Starring: Rebecca De Mornay, Jaime King, Patrick John Flueger and Warren Kole

This movie doesn’t beat around the bush. For a start, the goodies are called Sohapi and the baddies are called Koffin. Furthermore, we get a tasty dose of nastiness within the first ten minutes – which is nothing less than we’d expect from Bousman who directed Saw 2, 3 and 4. Three brothers, one seriously injured, are on the run from a botched bank job and decide to head to their family home for a bit of sanctuary, only to find that their mum and sister were evicted and the new tenants are partying on down with their friends.

What follows is a mighty fine house-invasion horror/thriller that is loosely based on 1980s Troma Studios low-budget flick of the same name. Rebecca De Mornay has been largely absent from our screens since the early 90s (Hand That Rocks the Cradle anyone?) but absolutely steals the show now with her ever so calm, ever so loving, brutally psychotic Mother Koffin taking charge of her brood.

This is not a film for the faint-hearted, there are some really vicious scenes, but even if you can stomach the gore the tension that just builds and builds may break even the sturdiest of nerves.
