Kristen Wiig stars as Annie, a romantically unattached failed bakery owner whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian (Rudolph), and a group of colourful bridesmaids on a wild ride down the road to matrimony.
Annie's life is a mess. But when she finds out her lifetime BFF is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian's maid of honour. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. With one chance to get it absolutely right, she'll show Lillian and her bridesmaids just how far you'll go for someone you love.
The script is raunchy, scatological and filled with bad language, but it’s also tender and sweet – and most of all, it’s hilariously funny, with an outlandish surprise around almost every corner.
Paul Feig directs with a sure hand, and is blessed with a terrific cast – Chris O’Dowd as a friendly cop, Rose Byrne as a Mrs. Too-Perfect, Matt Lucas as Wiig’s freakish roommate and Rebel Wilson as his well-upholstered sister. A particular standout is Melissa McCarthy (looking like Ricky Gervais in drag) in a potentially star-making turn as a portly, butch member of the wedding party.
Essentially a funnier female version of The Hangover, Bridesmaids is an infectiously humorous and bittersweet look at how life can change even the strongest of friendships.
