Immaculate misconception
Director: Josh Gordon
Starring: Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Thomas Robinson, Jeff Goldblum
Kassie (Aniston) is a 44-year-old TV producer who is becoming ever more preoccupied with the ticking of her biological clock. Worried that she’ll never meet the right man to start a family with, she informs her best friend, Wally (Bateman), that she’s going to use a donor to get pregnant. But when Wally accidentally spills the ‘offering’ at Kassie’s insemination party while a little worse for wear, he replaces it with his own.
Fast forward seven years and Kassie returns to New York with her son, Sebastian (Robinson). When Wally begins to notice the similarities between Sebastian and himself, the dirty details of that fateful night cannot remain a secret for much longer.
Based on a short story called The Baster, The Switch is a surprisingly heartfelt comedy that succeeds thanks to the great chemistry between Jason Bateman and his on-screen son, Thomas Robinson. The supporting cast are also worthy of mention – particularly the hilarious Jeff Goldblum.
If you’re expecting a Jennifer Aniston romcom, you’ll be disappointed, primarily because Bateman steals the show. Despite – or maybe because of – this, it’s actually well worth watching.
