The Last Airbender

Gone with the wind.

gonewith

Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Starring: Noah Ringer, Jackson Rathbone, Cliff Curtis, Dev Patel

Based on Avatar, a highly popular anime cartoon series, The Last Airbender is set in a world divided into four kingdoms, each represented by one of the elements – water, earth, air and fire. For nearly a century, the Fire nation has waged war on its fellow tribal nations and the prophesised Avatar – a young boy called Aang (Ringer), who has the power to control all four of the elements – is the lone weapon that can repel the Fire nation’s onslaught and ultimately restore balance to the war-torn world.

Shyamalan’s latest film has come under fire in some quarters for not using more Asian stars. Airbender’s problem, though, is not the casting. It’s the wooden script, choppy editing, unconvincing special effects and the stiff, awkward acting.

The hour and a half film drags and frustrates further still by ending on a cliffhanger – it remains to be seen whether Airbender is successful enough to warrant a sequel. We rather hope it isn’t.

Genre: Action | Adventure | Family | Fantasy
Age Restriction:
Rated PG for fantasy action violence.
Runtime: 103 min
