Abu Dhabi Week spoke to Emily Gordon and Andrew Field about their upcoming group art exhibition, No White Walls. Also featuring the works of prominent UAE based artists Jen Simon, Julia Ibbini, Kathryn Ryan, Sean Blake and Janine Ibbini, we found out more about what’s to come.

Tell us a little bit about the history of this art exhibition. How did this come about?

EG: This is the third year for this exhibition and we wanted fun, like-minded people to exhibit with us. We wanted to feature talented, Abu Dhabi homegrown artists.

How will you manage to keep the exhibition fresh?

EG: We are planning on having a Part 1 and Part 2 of the exhibition, to mix it up. The show changes itself organically anyways, because the art literally sells off the wall. When something sells we have something new to go in its place. For Part 2, we have some ideas to mix up the exhibition and kick it up into something a bit different.

Is there a specific theme to the exhibition?

AF: I think all the artists are sort of reflecting their interests in the city, in the culture, in the heritage – because artists are all the time vetted by their surroundings. They are reacting to what they are becoming familiar with.

EG: In our way, the artwork reflects our vision of being here in Abu Dhabi.

What sort of works will be on show?

EG: The most important thing about this exhibition is the diversity and quality of work. We have digital pieces, textile artists, mixed media, landscapes, photography and colourful pop art. We really have something for everyone.

As an art teacher, you are passionate about educational outreach. Can you tell us more about what you plan on doing to inspire others?

AF: The exhibition will be visited by students and parents of my school to hopefully inspire and encourage younger generations to pursue their interests and nurture their talents. This means dedication, focus and energy, which are key skills to have as a professional artist.

Tell us about your affordable art wall.

EG: We are doing a whole wall of affordable art works for guests. It’s a bit of a visual sampler, a taste of what we all do. There will also be limited edition prints being sold from artists showcased in the exhibition by Capsule Arts. Most importantly, a percentage of the sales will be going to the Special Needs Centre.

No White Walls will be exhibited at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr from 19th September to 1st January 2014. To find out more visit: www.facebook.com/NoWhiteWallsUAE
