The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City have triggered a new hi-tech phase with the introduction of infrared gadgets to count swimmers on the Corniche beach.

A state-of-the-art system uses infrared rays to detect body heat and transfers the data to a programme for analysis.

The findings will be used to assess the number of people using the Corniche facilities.

“The municipality will utilise the figures issued by the counting system to compile a database that will support decision-makers,” said Abdullah Nasir Al Junaibi, director of community services, Abu Dhabi City Municipality, “with regard to upgrading beach facilities, improving public services and helping to upgrade the beach to cope with the ongoing rise in numbers of visitors throughout the year.”

This implementation of the infrared counter comes in line with the municipality’s aim to adopt more environment-friendly systems.

“The visitors’ counting system – the e-counter – is considered the right option, given that the system runs on long-term batteries that lasts for ten years and it does not require any infrastructure of its own,” Al Junaibi said.

“It is also safe in terms of environment and health since it uses infrared rays that detect the heat of the human body without making any harmful emissions.”

It is anticipated that the findings will also help the municipality identify the least popular areas of the beach and take steps to address shortcomings, in addition to accurately reporting on new development projects and initiatives.
