An Abu Dhabi-based boating company is promoting an environmentally friendly community with the launch of its Mangrove Island Clean-up Project this Sunday.

Capt. Tony’s has teamed up with Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi and Yas Marina to gather a handful of students from the British International School Abu Dhabi and Al Muna School as well as volunteer staff from the Hyatt Green Team. The group of twenty green enthusiasts will head out on 16th March to the remote island known as Dolphin Bay, led by marine biologist Arabella Willing, to collect washed up debris including plastic waste and metal scraps that threaten the local wildlife. The rubbish will then be taken to Yas Marina and placed in the relevant recycling containers.

Capt. Tony’s owner Antonio Neto initiated the project to shed light on the natural beauty that lies off the capital’s coastline while exposing the environmental challenges faced by the local eco-system.

“Dolphin Bay is one of the destinations that we visit the most on our regular beach tours and eco tours,” said Neto. “A lot of bottles and plastic containers are thrown ashore and wash up on the mangroves. The rubbish stays there for a long time and lines up along the mangroves. We want to take the schools and green groups in the city to create awareness of the environmental issues that we face on the coastline.”

The first project is being held to mark the start of the UAE Green Festival on 15th March and Capt. Tony’s hopes to invite more volunteers and students to take part in further clean-up programmes throughout year.
