Environmentally-conscious residents of Abu Dhabi showed a fantastic ‘can’-do attitude recently, turning out in huge numbers to boost ‘Can Collection Day’.
Organised by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), the special day was part of its nationwide, year-long Can Collection Campaign, which aims to collect 27,000kg of cans before the end of the year.
The nationwide initiative, which was held on 27th February, saw over 262 entities including private companies, schools, municipalities, public organisations and families come together to gather 5,520kg of cans, which means the EEG is now 20 per cent closer to its 2014 goal.
“The achievements of this objective will entail significant benefits: 655 m3 of landfill will be saved; 405 million metric tons of carbon dioxide will be mitigated; and 6,145 million British Thermal Units of energy will be saved,” said Habiba Al Marashi, chairperson of the EEG. “We are calling on all members of society to continue collecting.”
In a bid to boost individual’s recycling efforts, residents are being encouraged to bring their cans to EEG’s offices. A similar initiative will take place on 11th October. For more information, visit: www.eeg-uae.org
