Record-breaking plate
(3 votes, average 3.67 out of 5)

recordbreakingThe hammer came down on the third most expensive licence plate in the world at an auction in the Emirates Palace on Saturday as a plate bearing the single digit ‘7’ was sold for a massive AED 17 million.

In total, 72 distinctive plates were sold at the auction, raising more than AED 50 million. All the money raised will go to charity and humanitarian works.

The UAE now holds the record for all three of the most expensive vanity plates in the world. The priciest, carrying the number ‘1’, was sold to Emirati businessman Said Khouri in 2008 for a staggering AED 52 million, while the second most expensive plate ‘5’ went for AED 25 million in 2007.

The auction was organised by the Abu Dhabi Police in collaboration with Emirates Auction Company under the theme ‘Distinguished Number for a Distinguished Aim’.

We don’t know if the licence plate will be fortunate enough to find itself attached to a car with an “I love Abu Dhabi Week” sticker.
