Le Royal Méridien’s new school initiative is fighting fat

Over a third of the UAE’s children aged six to 19 are severely overweight according to a study conducted by Zayed Military Hospital.

Starwood Hotels and Resorts – a network of hotels that includes Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi – has taken the lead in combatting this statistic by introducing an Adopt a School initiative in Abu Dhabi.

The five-star hotel’s executive chef and director of food and beverage, Justin Galea, will train local chefs so they can teach hands-on sessions about healthy food in primary schools.

Justin says, “As we see more health problems such as obesity and diabetes, it’s important that we, as ‘food experts’, share our knowledge on nutrition and good food preparation with the new generation. Involving parents and teachers in that commitment is key to ensuring our children’s healthy futures.”
