Yas Island will once again be awash with sporting professionals this November, as flowboarders from across the globe descend on the capital hoping to backflip and air grab their way to glory.

For the third year running,Yas Waterworld will play host to the World Flowboarding Championships, where teams from over 14 countries will try and wrestle the trophy from the reigning world champs – Team UAE. The competition, which is open to spectators, will take place on 6th and 7th November.

Flowboarding is essentially surfing on a manmade wave machine, known globally as a FlowBarrel or at the waterpark, Bubble’s Barrel. Competitors will be rated on their tricks and moves during an allotted time on the wave through a series of rounds. And the athletes from the USA, South Africa, Chile and Spain are not being underestimated by Team UAE.

Mohammed Ibrahim Darwish, an Emirati representing Team UAE, told us: “Last year’s competition was quite intense, and we look forward to seeing our competition in November.

“The best outcome of the win has been the increase in the number of UAE residents interested in taking part in flowboarding,” continued Darwish. “There is still a lack of awareness about the sport, especially among Emiratis. But that’s now beginning to change.”

Team UAE won the title last year, the first time in the competition’s seven-year history. Along with Darwish, fellow Emirati Humaid Obaid will compete alongside Max Sokolov, Jennifer Mauherhoff and reigning world individual champion, Clayton Barker.
