Accessible and appetising

As part of a recent makeover, Le Royal Méridien has made major changes from its hotel rooms to its food and beverage outlets. Located in the heart of the capital, the landmark hotel is popular with businessmen and women for its central location and relaxed atmosphere.

When we headed to WhEAT, one of the hotel’s newly opened outlets, we immediately felt as if we were in a European bistro. The restaurant offers seating both outdoors and indoors with high wooden tables for groups of friends. The pastry counter is as enticing as the retail shelves which are stocked with homemade flavoured oils, chocolates and jams.

The menu is an easy read, featuring a simple selection of hearty breakfast dishes, appetisers, sandwiches, light bites, fresh bakery items, homemade sweets and funky beverages.

We started with the rustic bread appetiser – slightly sweet batons of grilled bread were served with garlic marinated olives, hummus and moutabal. Meanwhile, the crispy fried squid sat atop a fresh green salad, perfectly balanced with hints of chilli and lime.

For the main course, the WhEAT club slider is a creative twist on the traditional club sandwich. Three mini sweet burger buns were filled with coronation chicken, fried egg, stringy turkey bacon and melted cheese. Meanwhile, the sesame and coriander falafel, which was perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the outside, was served with flat bread, yoghurt and hummus.

Bursting at the seams, we forced ourselves to try a selection of the chef’s homemade ice creams, which proved to be the highlight of the meal. Coffee lovers will adore the smooth Turkish coffee ice cream but it was the strawberry cheesecake, with its pieces of fresh berries and graham cracker chunks that beautifully rounded off the meal.
