When that iconic soundtrack begins, we are transported in to the Star Wars universe once again – and it feels like home.

As the yellow text scrolls down the screen in the opening of Episode VII: The Force Awakens it’s hard not feel a wave of nostalgia and familiarity like being reunited with an old friend.

Reading the first four words in the synopsis you sit up and take notice, instantly engrossed in the story to come, waiting to see where the adventure will take you. It’s a magical experience, giving you the same feeling you had when you saw a Star Wars film for the first time.

With all the hype surrounding this film it would be easy to fall short of expectations, but it doesn’t; this film delivers and draws you back in to the franchise after the highs and lows of the prequels.

It’s epic in its scale, full of great performances, plot twists, impressive computer graphics and humour. But behind all the glitz there’s a familiar feel to the film harking back to the comfort and success of the original trilogy.

JJ Abrams has delivered a film of quality, successfully transitioning the franchise in to a new era with skill and precision.

Combining the old with the new, the ‘legacy characters’ grace the film in a way that feels natural, not just forced out of retirement for one last waltz and a generous pay-day.

The new breed put in stellar performances with Daisey Ridley as the standout alongside a brilliant John Boyega, swaggering Oscar Isaac and the lovable BB8.
