“Al Dhafra Festival has turned into a special occasion and an annual gathering for the GCC peoples,” said Abdullah Butti Al Qubaisi, Director of Projects Management at the Cultural Programs and Heritage Festivals Committee. “It aspires to preserve the cultural heritage of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and the UAE in general.”

One of the many contests planned is the Arab heritage Saluki race, held on the camel racetrack on 23rd and 30th December 2014 and due to start around noon. The hunting capabilities of these majestic purebred desert hounds will be put to the test by a runaway (artificial) gazelle, with the fastest times set to nab the trophy.

Arabian Salukis are one of the world’s oldest breeds as can be traced back almost 13,000 years. They are known for their exceptional stamina, intelligence, hunting skills and loyalty.

“Hunting with Salukis has a long tradition in the Arabian Peninsula and it’s deeply rooted in Bedouin culture and heritage,” said Obaid Khalfan Al Mazrouei, Director of the traditions events of Al Dhafra Festival. “The festival aims to raise awareness on traditional values and ethics of Bedouin life and to preserve and celebrate the Saluki breed in its homeland.”
