Pacquiao throws jab at cancer

Pinoy ring hero extends helping hand to cancer patients

Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao capped off a busy weekend in the UAE by stopping off at Yas Marina – all in the name of a good cause.

The former world champion visited Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi for a charity walk and cycle event called RahmaYas. It was in aid of Rahma – a charitable service launched by the Cancer Patient Care Society in Abu Dhabi to offer support to people with cancer.

“Helping people is a personal advocacy,” Pacquiao told Abu Dhabi Week. “I’ve been active in supporting charity organisations in the Philippines but also would love to extend that outside of my home country. Being here is really an honor.”

The PacMan also dipped into his own pocket and donated $50,000 (AED 183,647) to the Rahma staff and gamely posed for pictures with excited participants.

“I’m really surprised that I have lots of fans here,” he smiled. “I’ve been in the UAE for a week and the reception was more than what I expected.”

The 36-year-old southpaw is scheduled for a ring return next year, which will possibly be his farewell bout before he bows out of professional boxing. Manny intends to step into the political arena after boxing eyeing a senate seat in the Philippines for the 2016 elections.

“I intend to focus on politics after boxing,” he said. “That’s really my goal. I hope the people would trust me enough for the job.”
