On the go? The capital boasts a range of taxi models to suit every passenger
Cabs are cheap in Abu Dhabi, making them the preferred method of transport in the capital.
Although all taxis look the same, they are operated by six different companies – National, Arabia, Al Ghazal, Cars, Tawasul and Emirates – all under the supervision of The Centre for Regulation of Transport by Hire Cars (TransAD). Here’s a guide to the types of taxis on offer.
Standard
These silver units are often Toyota Camry saloons and come in four-seater models. Feeling eco-friendly? Hail the hybrid units, which have a blue water drop symbol with the caption ‘pioneers for a better tomorrow’ and ‘hybrid synergy drive’ on their doors. The hybrid units operate on electricity, which saves approximately 38 per cent on fuel cost.
Family taxi
Available in four-seater Toyota Camry and seven-seater Innova models, these taxis cater specifically to families, women and children. Women drive the Innova units, but male passengers are allowed to take the taxi if they’re with their family. These taxis are typically found in malls, hospitals, hotels and parks. A passenger can request a female driver when booking.
Special needs taxi
These Mercedes Vito units are designed with electronic wheelchair lifts, secure wheelchair fastenings and a high roof for convenience. TransAD trained a number of taxi drivers so they can assist wheelchair users according to international standards. It uses the standard flagfall rate of AED 3.50 and passengers are advised to book at least 30 minutes in advance.
Mercedes Vito Compact
This recently launched model can accommodate up to five passengers and features leather seats and glass between the driver and passengers for privacy. Added features include special ramps and locks to secure wheelchairs in place. The standard flagfall rate of AED 3.50 applies.
Airport taxi
As you walk out of the arrivals hall of Abu Dhabi International Airport you’ll see a parade of these black Mercedes Vito vans, which are spacious enough to accommodate up to seven passengers and their luggage. The units are designed with a navigation system and the driver even wears a hat. Some are designed for disabled passengers, too. Both models are available 24/7 at Terminals 1 and 2, and run on eco-friendly fuel. A flagfall rate of AED 25 applies.
