Fright Night

Get set to celebrate all things scary… it’s Halloween

frightnight_01

The feast of Halloween, on 31st October, is fast approaching. It’s time to think about trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins, apple bobbing, playing pranks, watching horror films, and planning a party for your friends… or your little monsters. A frightening thought? Never fear, read on…

Choose a costume

Dressing up is fun for all ages. Traditionally witches and werewolves, vampires and zombies all make an appearance this time of year. Posters is your best bet for costumes, they have something to suit all family members from skeleton suits to mummy masks. For more information call: 02 443 7089.

Or why not do-it-yourself. With a little imagination and online research you could dress up as a famous couple such as Kim Kardashian and Kayne West, or Prince William and Kate Middleton, or look up the 2013 bestselling books or this year’s top movies for inspiration.

Two simple ideas

Walter White from Breaking Bad

Find yourself a yellow lab coat of some kind and a pair of round, metal-framed glasses to instantly transform yourself into Walter White. Works best with a shaved head. You will also need a fake goatee beard, or better still grow your own.

A bunch of grapes

Dress in green and use safety pins to attach blown up green balloons all over your body. Better still, talk your friends into doing the same and go together as a bowl of fruit.

Spooky shortcuts

And finally, if planning your own bash seem like a bit of an effort, help is at hand in the form of party planners Lana’s Partiperfect. They are hosting a Halloween fun day on 29th and 30th October from 4pm to 5.30pm, where your little ones can try their hand at pumpkin carving, spooky painting and cookie decorating. Cost AED 100 per child. To book call: 02 681 0090.

Or bring the kids to Spookfest taking place at all Fun City outlets across Abu Dhabi. The Spookfest party runs from 3pm to 6pm on Thursday 31st October. Guests can participate in a pumpkin carving competition, treasure hunt and eerie games. Party-goers should dress to impress, as there are a number of exciting prizes up for grabs in the Spooktacular Fancy Dress Competition. Entry fee AED 50 including games, activities and a meal.

Something to sink your teeth into…

Ice-cream spiders

Ingredients:

  • Chocolate ice cream
  • Black liquorice sticks
  • Raisins

Method: Put a scoop of chocolate ice cream in the center of a bowl. Poke eight pieces of black liquorice along the side of the scoop to make the legs. Add two raisins for the eyes.

Witch ice cream

Ingredients:

  • Mint ice cream
  • Ice cream cones
  • Smarties
  • Strawberry laces

Method: Put one scoop of ice cream on a plate and place strawberry laces on top for hair, then the cone for a hat, use smarties for eyes and nose and a little bit of lace for the mouth.

Toffee apples

Ingredients:

  • 5 medium-sized apples
  • 450g soft caramel or toffee sweets
  • 2 tbsp water

Method: Stick a wooden skewer through a clean apple. Slowly melt the caramel sweets until smooth and add the water. Dip the apples in the toffee and swirl until completely coated. Lay on greaseproof paper place in the fridge to harden.

Ghostly games – Dead man’s last meal

Ingredients:

  • Green jelly
  • Plastic spiders and other creepy crawlies
  • Halloween sweets such as jelly snakes
  • A blindfold

Method: Make up a big bowl of jelly the night before the party, make it slightly runny by using a little too much water so resembles green ‘goo’ rather than firmly set jelly. Drop in your creepy crawlies. Blindfold the kids in turn so they can dip their hands into the ‘goo’ and guess what the dead man ate for his last meal.
