Panic over paint

We all know our children have buckets of energy and personality but how do we express that in their bedrooms? Abu Dhabi Week’s newest mum-on-staff comes up with a few creative suggestions

It’s a brave step
As an adult decorating is a matter of taste and aesthetics, but when thinking about a children’s room the situation becomes much more complex. It is about function, practicality and comfort.

Whether you are moving a child into their bedroom for the first time or moving homes all together, it is important to maintain a comfort zone. It is a very brave move to allow your child to put their own stamp on their room, be it a simple poster or an entire feature wall, but there are numerous benefits to be had.

Making the bedroom a place where he/she can feel comfortable and have a sense of belonging will make bedtime routines much less of a chore, with a familiar space they can retire to reducing stress and anxiety at bedtime.

Style and function
Combination furniture is one way you can develop your specific needs. Choosing a tall wardrobe can optimise space whilst giving you the freedom to add baskets/drawers and shoe hangers.

A tall bed can be fun and practical when space is tight. When buying a standard bed look for under-bed storage drawers and toy boxes to remove clutter or seasonal items and objects.

Mounted shelves are ideal for showing off prized possessions.

Colourful personality
What better way to create a fun atmosphere and show off a personality than with a splash of colour?

If personally you find the thought of lime green walls alarming there are other ways of introducing bold hues. Removable wall stickers and framed pictures are ideal for keeping up with your child’s flavour of the month as they can display whatever character/theme they’re interested in, without any permanent damage.

Brightly coloured furniture can also lighten the mood in a room and reflect his/her dazzling personality. The right lighting can be key in balancing out any bold colours and can create a calming ambiance perfect for any child to have their down time.
