Eleven-year old Oskar (Horn) discovers at a young age what it means to have a broken heart. The precocious and articulate son of jeweller Thomas Schell (Hanks), his life is turned upside down after his father’s death in the World Trade Centre attacks of 11th September.

Shortly after the tragic events of 9/11, Oskar finds a key in an envelope in a vase amongst his father’s things. The envelope has just one word written on it – the name ‘Black’. Over the next year or so, Oskar embarks on an expedition to find the lock that fits the key. A search is on, naturally inspired by his intrepid father, who would have wanted him to venture out and solve the mystery.

Based on Jonathan Safran Foer’s acclaimed novel, this adaptation is brought to the screen with great sensitivity and heart. The core story – which follows Oskar on a quest through New York City, often accompanied by an elderly mute (a terrific Max von Sydow) – is compelling, and young Horn is an appealing hero.

Powerfully emotional, sentimental and moving, if you only watch one movie this week, make sure it’s this!
