Till prison do us part

tillprison

Director: Paul Haggis
Starring: Russell Crowe, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson, Brian Dennehy

A Pittsburgh college professor (Crowe) is distraught when his wife (Banks) is arrested, tried and convicted of having murdered her boss. When the appeals process is exhausted, the devoted husband hatches a scheme to spring her from jail so they can flee to South America with their young son.

Remaking an 84-minute French thriller, Pour Elle, writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Valley of Elah) stretches the action to more than two hours, tracking the husband’s arduous self-tutorial in prison security and his rocky moral journey as he learns to function in the underworld.

The prison break, once it finally arrives, is admittedly exciting and filled with unexpected twists, but it’s a bit of a slog to get there. The Next Three Days might have fared a lot better if the screenwriters had just stuck to The Next Two Days.

It’s fun while it lasts, but when it’s over, you’ll move on to the next three movies.
