A busload of tourists stumble upon the shocking discovery that the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt has been stolen and replaced by an inflatable rubber duplicate.

Meanwhile, in a happy suburban neighbourhood sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unknown to the neighbours, hidden beneath this black house is the secret hideout of the supervillain Gru (Carell) his small army of minions. Upset by the theft of the Pyramid, he plans the biggest theft in the world: stealing the moon.

Universal’s first 3D animated movie is an entertaining twist on ‘The Incredibles’; a story about superheroes longing for the quiet life and taking a playful poke at supervillains.

While never quite reaching the heights of Pixar at its best, Despicable Me is nonetheless funny, clever and warmly animated with memorable characters and a fantastic use of 3D. Its core of sweetness and anarchic sense of humour make it much more than a poor man’s Pixar: an all round charming film that’s not at all despicable.
