We’ve had a love affair with Japanese cuisine since before we can remember, so it was with eager bellies that we headed down to Toki in the Hilton Abu Dhabi, to test out their offerings.
After being received we were lead into a special, traditionally-styled Japanese dining room – sliding doors and all. Immediately transported back to a lovely holiday in Kyoto years ago, we sit down on the floor enjoying the atmosphere and peruse the menu. After deciding our selections, we push a little buzzer on the table to call a server to give our order.
First up, a flavourful miso soup and a green salad dressed with a moreish ginger dressing. The tiny samplings are a perfect way to start off the meal. Eager for more, we then enjoy a selection of sushi rolls. We opt for the crispy California roll, double shrimp, spicy tuna and a particularly delightful triple salmon roll featuring the fish in three ways, for a truly textured treat.
For our main course, we are served miso black cod. A house favourite, the fillet is paired with a side of vegetables and is the standout of the night. Cooked to perfection, each mouthful of the slightly sweet fish is a delight to behold. While we savour our meal for as long as possible, our dining partner indulges on a large bento box featuring marinated Yakinuku beef, fried fish and vegetables.
And because we’re never one to say no to desert, we order a black sesame crème brulee to finish the meal. Coloured a gorgeous inky grey, the dessert is a fitting way to end the meal. Not overly sweet, the sesame flavour is a unique way to cleanse our palate.
If you’re a fan of Japanese food, we highly recommend this place. The attentive staff and great service made for a truly fantastic night out. And if you’re looking for a quiet meal, we highly suggest you opt for the private dinning room option, which made for a decidedly cosy and romantic meal and helped minimise any noise in the bustling restaurant.
