Interstellar (PG13) – Starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine, directed by Christopher Nolan

There are a handful of Hollywood directors that many movie fans will follow faithfully, and Christopher Nolan is one of them.

The director of top blockbusters like The Dark Knight, The Prestige and Inception, Nolan has become known for films that explore aspects of the human mind. His latest – and possibly most ambitious – is no exception.

In the near future, a crop disease has set the world back to an agrarian era where humans live in a dust bowl and man’s incredible achievements have been largely forgotten.

But pilot and engineer turned farmer Cooper (McConaughey) discovers a secret NASA facility run by Professor Brand (Caine) and his scientist daughter, Amelia (Hathaway) that aims to explore possible new homes away from Earth via a mysterious wormhole that appeared near Saturn.

The pilot is drafted in to complete the secret mission into space. But Cooper is torn between leaving his children and helping to save humanity – and his children’s future.

While critics are split over Interstellar, one thing they agree on is that McConaughey’s strong performance helps carry the film as the hopeful hero.

Interstellar lands in cinemas Thursday 6th November.
