John Wick (15+) – Starring Keanu Reeves, Alfie Allen and Adrianne Palicki, directed by Chad Stahelski

2014 has already seen plenty of gritty action movies: ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’; ‘300: Rise of an Empire’; and more recently, ‘The Equalizer.’ So it was about time Keanu Reeves added his brooding Neo-esque character to a revenge-driven actioner.

After five years out of the hit man game, John Wick (Reeves) sees his pleasantly placid life take an unexpected (for him, though not for the audience) turn for the worse. Grieving the loss of his wife, Wick is interrupted by gangster Iosef Tarasov (Allen) who not only steals his prized 1969 Ford Mustang and gives the ex-killer a severe beating – he also stoops so low as to kill Wick’s dog. The flame of movie revenge is set alight in our lead character.

Dusting off his old ‘tools’, and skulking out into the shadows of New York City, Wicks ends up biting off more than he can chew. The seemingly naïve gang on which he plans to inflict plenty of pain has a tie to his previous shady career; cue some frequent bullet-riddling.

Reeves manages to deliver with this movie, a lean and meaty performance which may even have you thrusting a supportive fist-pump or two. Despite its predictability, this flick is a great watch – and certainly worth seeing if you wish to restore some faith in Reeves, who hasn’t been at his greatest of late.

John Wick hits cinemas this Thursday 30th October.
