Experts are calling for patients to get technological in the fight against increasing cases of diabetes in the UAE.

With global diabetes figures projected to rise by over 50 percent by 2040 and the UAE ranked as 15th in the world for instances of the disease, the outlook looks grim unless changes are made.

In an address at the recent Arab Health conference, Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD) director general HE Dr Maha Taysir Barakat highlighted that smart phone applications and texts could be the way forward to increase awareness.

In a bid to diagnose the disease earlier, recommendations were also made to begin screening all adults from age 45, rather than those with high-risk BMIs.

On the agenda for discussion was the fact that diabetes is not only creating a strain on the body, but health services in the capital too:

“With the significance of non-communicable diseases in our society, we consider diabetes a top priority,” Dr Barakat explained.

“HAAD anticipates a growth in demand for general medical services linked to lifestyle-related diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, with larger volume increases in outpatient and inpatient settings.”

Increased support for expecting diabetics was also recommended, in order to better manage the disease throughout pregnancy.
