An open kitchen with large windows and red brick walls scrawled with messages and doodles add to the laidback, fun atmosphere.
A roughly cut A4 paper stuck askew to a piece of cardboard acts as the menu; the writing and description of each menu item is equally as improvised. The brief selection includes a regular beef burger, cheeseburger or just grilled cheese for vegetarians.
We opt for the cheeseburger and add our extras: lettuce, tomato, onion, sliced pickles and ketchup and a whole pickle. But no burger is complete without a side of fries – a gluttonous cheese option is also available.
Keen to get the full American diner experience, we also order a vanilla milkshake. There are pie-flavoured versions too but we aren’t that brave.
Our burgers swiftly arrive, rustically wrapped in paper and served in a metal baking tray. We get stuck into the juicy patties. The melted cheese hugs our burger as we bite into the bun, leaving stretches of cheese between hand and mouth. Warning: your meal may get messy.
Our guest, a self-professed ‘milkshake connoisseur’, believes burger joint new york’s creamy concoctions are the best in town, mostly because they use ice cream rather than ice and milk. But we’ll let you be the judge of that.
The burgers – along with the fries and whole pickle – were a filling lunch, so we decide not to order the one dessert option – a chocolate brownie with ice cream. But if you think you can handle it, more power to you.
