It’s hard not to get excited about Zuma. With eight locations scattered across the globe, foodies rave about it and regulars just can’t get enough. And it’s no wonder our Dubai neighbours are so proud of their own branch. So the decision to open a restaurant in the capital has so far proved to be a colossal success.

Teak in its natural form, organically-hewn Thai stone counter tops and walls, and smoldering copper adorn the space from top to bottom; the majority of the food is cooked in open-front kitchens and sushi stations. The menu seems vast, but that’s a trick; every dish is so enticing, making it difficult to know where to start and what to pick.

Zuma is all about sharing. So along with our friend in true ‘izakaya’ style, we decide to share – not one but 15 dishes! So what stood out? Here are our suggestions.

We start with the tuna tataki. Seared tuna smothered in chili daikon and ponzu roused our palate with a zing; it was a shame we had to share it. That goes for the suzuki no osashimi too. Thinly sliced seabass with yuzu, truffle oil and salmon roe provide plenty of texture and flavour in this zesty starter.

As we tuck into a trio of main courses, we grin with surprise at every mouthful. It is like each plate is fighting for our attention. A meaty jab of chili ponzu beef tenderloin was trumped by the signature miso marinated black cod, only to be knocked out by the jumbo tiger prawn with yuzu pepper – our champ of the night.

A hybrid of modern cooking techniques and traditional Japanese flavours is the perfect excuse for your next treat-yourself-dinner. Zuma is a triumph.
