Shelves upon shelves of bestselling novels have formed the basis of various Hollywood blockbusters in recent years, from trilogies like Lord of the Rings to the recent teen flick The Maze Runner.

From the director of Seven and The Social Network, the highly anticipated Gone Girl – based on the best selling novel by Gillian Flynn – is a thriller that explores dishonesty, the power of media and the realities of relationships.

The film opened recently to high acclaim, although viewers are keeping mum to avoid spoiling the plot, which twists and turns throughout.

Nick Dunne (Affleck) and his wife Amy (Pike) are on the rocks. Their marriage is falling apart as they both lose their jobs in the midst of a recession and move from New York City to Missouri.

But on the day of their fifth wedding anniversary, Dunne comes home to find Amy missing. In the days following her disappearance, Dunne watches as the media slathers accusations across the press, helping to make him the prime suspect.

As the team of detectives investigating Amy’s disappearance begins to do some digging, they uncover a string of suspicious activities that casts Dunne further into the spotlight: financial troubles, domestic dispute, evidence of a struggle.

The characters of Gone Girl carry the storyline and their strong performances allow the audience to experience the reality of the film’s elements from relationship conflicts to the power of manipulation.

Gone Girl hits cinemas Thursday 16th October.
